First and foremost, Jeff will use his candidacy for Common Council to engage more people in neighborhood issues and city government. He understands how difficult it can be for people to become aware of and involved in community matters. Jeff will work to engage both longtime 6th Ward residents as well as those people who have not traditionally been involved in community affairs. He will ensure that the voices of young people, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, renters, local bar and restaurant workers, and new neighborhood residents are heard regarding issues affecting our city.

As your councilmember, Jeff will undertake active and continuous community outreach in order to learn the sentiments of his full constituency, including those residents who have not traditionally participated in local government. He knows that only through extensive community outreach will he be able to represent the true will of his constituents and avoid falling into the trap of listening to only a small but vocal minority of people.

The Albany Common Council currently has only two attorney members, both of whom have announced that they will not be running for re-election in 2021. It is vitally important that the Albany Common Council have an attorney member to work with the City Attorney, ensure that the Council does not pass unconstitutional legislation, and prevent the City from being exposed to avoidable lawsuits at taxpayer expense.

As an experienced attorney, Jeff will bring his legal skills and expertise to the Common Council in order to guide its members in pursuing responsible courses of action and to help the City avoid unnecessary litigation and liability. As your councilmember, Jeff will provide you with the same tenacious representation he provides his clients every day as a civil rights attorney for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Having been in and around politics for years, Jeff does not hold most politicians in high regard. Most politicians refuse to take bold or controversial stances because they are paralyzed by the fear of not being liked or re-elected.

Jeff will not be like most politicians. As your councilmember, he will maintain the same commitment he has held throughout his life to working for social justice and making his community a better place. Although he can’t promise that you will always agree with him, he will make every effort to ensure that you know where he stands and how he arrived there. Jeff will employ an evidence-based analytical framework to all of his policy decisions, weighing both the input of his constituents as well as the relative strengths and weaknesses of proposed legislation. Jeff promises to be an energetic, deliberative, and professional member of the Albany Common Council. He hopes to make his constituents proud of his advocacy and representation.
